East Lemon Cays – San Blas

We launched the drone before we even arrived at the East Lemon Cays as we were not 100% sure of the entrance location. From the direction we were arriving, the chart didn’t seem the same as what we were visually seeing. This turned out to be due to islands in the background merging with the ones in front. Once the drone was up, it all became clear. We were about to arrive in another stunning anchorage. San Blas seems to be full of them.

We encountered the ‘Veggie Boat’ for the first time. It is a huge dugout with an outboard engine. It seems strange to have an engine on a dugout. This dugout had been modified though and the freeboard height increased to allow for heavier loads. In the video, you will see the original hull carved out of a tree. Quite incredible. The fruit and veg from this boat were perfect and it was a fun experience.

We found the snorkelling here fantastic. Not a lot of fish, but the corals were well worth exploring. If you are making your way back to Linton Bay or Shelter Bay, this is a good spot to depart from. Our sail / motor back was frustrating as we had no wind. When the cloud arrived, we suddenly had 20 knots and then it was gone again.

Arriving in Linton Bay in darkness is not fun as a lot of boats don’t turn on their anchor lights. When there is no moon, a blue hull yacht can appear out of nowhere. It was good to be back though as we were low on diesel and food.
