Stuck in Columbia by Dylan

As you all know recently the Coronavirus has become very dangerous and serious. For this reason many countries have closed their borders to any flights or incoming cruisers like us. The San Blas islands have been shut down and so has Panama. Meaning that we have nowhere to go! Hopefully this does not last too long so we can go ahead and carry on with our amazing adventures. The Panama Canal is shut for all cruisers, meaning that for the moment we cannot pass on to the Pacific. We are currently in Santa Marta marina in Columbia, and we are waiting and hoping that Panama will open up for us soon!

Walking round the streets you will see many people with face masks on. Columbia is a very beautiful, colourful country that is definitely worth a visit. (Especially if a good burger costs £2!) Everything in Columbia is very cheap, and the rumours saying that Columbia is a very dangerous country are no longer true. Yes, in the past there were a lot of drug traffickers but by the looks and sounds of it that has slowed down now and is not as bad. You obviously need to be careful in the big cities – but doesn’t that apply in all big cities? I haven’t felt unsafe at all!

There are so many things to see and do. For example a few days ago we took a taxi to a village called Minca, and went to the oldest coffee plantation and a waterfall. This was so much fun, I would highly advise going to see Minca if you are visiting Columbia. Everyone in Columbia is very nice, and the culture is very different to what I have seen before.

I would highly advise going to have dinner in one of the city’s old regions, but although cheap be sure to bring extra money with you, as you will see the most amazing street performers on the planet, doing all kinds of crazy dances, raps and tricks – it is truly spectacular and worth experiencing!

The landscape is very mountainous meaning there are many great hikes for you to do. The beaches are amazing and so is the fishing. Believe me there are some monsters that need to be caught!

Columbia could never get boring! I would highly advise going as this has been one of my favourite spots we have ever been to.

Out of everywhere we’ve been I’m happy we are stuck here. (But I would like to carry on to the Pacific so please stop Coronavirus, please!)

    Hi Dylan,
Great to read your Columbia blog. Does sound different and interesting. You write very well. Better than I did at your age so home schooling seems to be working. I still can’t spell and I turn 81 in May!

Covid-19 is an increasing issue worldwide. Those countries on the front foot will best protect their citizens and economy. I am fortunate to be in Australia.

If you want to be informed about America in a balanced way try and watch PBS news.

Keep washing your hands. And always stay on starboard tack for a safe journey through life.

    Best wishes

    John (Great uncle!)
